BOOK REVIEW: Yes Please by Amy Poehler
Where do I even begin with this book? I am not usually a nonfiction reader, but I saw this book online and I had to have it, especially since I've been on a Parks and Recreation Netflix kick recently. And, I mean, it's Amy-fucking-Poehler, who doesn't love her?
This book spoke to me in ways others haven't. It's fine to be a strong woman and mom who doesn't always know what she is doing. It's great to have compassion, but still crave more in life. Moreover, the body and mind positive messages were uplifting at a time when I have been struggling.
In addition to life lessons, Yes Please also dished up the back story on Amy Poehler, and I was interested in seeing how she made her big break. Unsurprisingly, it took a lot of grit.
WHAT I LIKED: The book was riddled with history, personal anecdotes, life lessons, and plenty of humor. Even though I have been in a writing slump (I'm blaming daylight saving time for my lackluster mood), I could pick up Yes Please and read a few chapters and feel accomplished.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: Parts of the book seemed wordy, and could have been cut. To me, so many stories about what happened in the 80s began to drag on. Then again, some people enjoy that. Often, I'm an impatient reader.
RATED:4 Stars
Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of nonfiction, and this was my second of the year, however, I did enjoy it, and the body positive and mind positive messages it sent.
NOTE: This review is also posted on Goodreads. Additionally, I bought and paid for the book on my own, and did not receive any compensation for this review.
